China Data Update:
The New Release of "China Geo-Explorer"
In collaboration with the All China Market Research Co., Ltd and the State Key Laboratory for Information Engineering in Surveying, Mapping and Remote Sensing (LIESMARS) of Wuhan University, the China Data Center is offering a new spatial data service for China demographic and economic data, maps, charts and reports in the web-based delivery system. With this spatial intelligence, users will be able to make rapid, accurate spatial decisions with greater confidence for regional planning, business investment, population, housing, environmental assessment, public health and many other spatial applications. Data sources in this database includes demographic and business information for all PRC geographies, including 31 Provinces, 345 Prefecture Cities, 2,873 Counties, and over 50,000 Townships.
The features of this online service include:
Ø Efficient data integration for spatial and non-spatial data (custom radii, administrative units, spatial boundaries)
Ø Quick and accurate location analysis and spatial assessment
Ø Identify spatial patterns and trends

Special Workshop: “Spatial Data Analysis in Cyberspace: Data, Methodology and Tools”

This event is co- sponsored by GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation, Arizona State University and China Data Center, the University of Michigan.
This workshop is designed to introduce some new tools for spatial studies in cyberspace as well as their applications for regional studies, which will include the spatial analytical web services built on PySAL developed by GeoDa Center for Geospatial Analysis and Computation at Arizona State University, and China Geo-Explorer, a web based system for spatial data analysis offered by the China Data Center at the University of Michigan. The workshop will discuss the methodology, functions, and data available for spatial studies as well as China studies. Some case studies will be demonstrated for applications in spatial economy and population, environmental assessment, and industrial transferring and clustering. Researchers from government agencies, research institutes, and universities will find the workshop particularly relevant.
Topics will include: (1) Introduction to Spatial Statistics and Modeling for Regional Analysis; (2) Introduction to PySAL and Web Based Spatial Statistics; and (3) Spatial Data Analysis with China Geo-Explorer.

Introduction to China Data Center Partners:
1. Center for Geographic Analysis, Harvard University
The University of Michigan China Data Center (CDC) and the Center for Geographic Analysis of Harvard University agree to establish a partnership in cooperative research activities. Such collaboration include: (1) Co-sponsoring ChinaMap project hosted by CGA, which will provide a web based free showcase for China maps; (2) Fostering the exchange of scholarly information, including interoperability between already existing databases and their subparts, especially as far as the cross-linking of the China Geo-Explorer hosted by CDC and the ChinaMap hosted by CGA is concerned; (3) Developing joint research activities in the field of spatial data service and applications for research and education; (4) Promoting other activities which enhance the academic exchanges between CDC and CGA.
The Center for Geographic Analysis (CGA) at Harvard University was established in 2006 to support research and teaching of all disciplines across the University with emerging geospatial technologies. The Center’s goal has been to work with entities across the university to strengthen university-wide geographic information systems (GIS) infrastructure and services; provide a common platform for the integration of spatial data from diverse sources and knowledge from multiple disciplines; enable scholarly research that would use, improve or study geospatial analysis techniques; and improve the ability to teach GIS and spatial analysis at all levels across the university.

Dr. Naiquan Liu is an associate professor at the Institute of Finance and Economics of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
